From its humble beginnings as a reconnaissance flight, using second-hand aircraft at the very end of the Battle of Britain, No 91 'Nigeria' Sqn went on to become of of the most famous units in the RAF Fighter Command. Often flying solo reconnaissance missions over 'Fortress Europe' in all types of weather, and regularly opposed by technically-superior Bf 109G and Fw 190 fighters, the unit achieved outstanding results. No 91 Sqn developed new low-level interception tactics in an effort to counter coastal 'tip and run' raiders, and thus further proved its worth by defending the south coast of England firstly from manned fighter-bombers and then V1 pilotless flying bombs. Equipped with the very latest marks of Spitfire for much of the conflict, No 91 Sqn was one of the few units to fly the superlative Supermarine fighter throughout World War 2.
