The P-51 Mustang and P-47 Thunderbolt were the finest US fighters of World War II, and both saw service with the RAF in substattial numbers. The Mustang originated from a British requirement and the design, originally powered by an Allison engine, was ordered "off the drawing board" for the RAF. When the fighter was subsequently married to a US-built Merlin engine it proved an instant success. Examples of the latter aircraft--known as the Mustang III--entered RAF service in the early part of 1944, when its range and firepower were quickly appreciated on escort missions over France in the build-up to D-Day, as well as in the Mediterranean. With a sufficiency of excellent fighters available for use in Europe, the mighty P-47 Thunderbolt was used by the RAF exclusively against the Japanese in Burma, where its range, firepower and ruggedness were much appreciated in the harsh conditions encountered there. A total of 13 RAF pilots became aces flying the Mustang while a further 27 aces achieved at least part of their scores in Mustangs or Thunderbolts. In addition, no fewer than 26 Mustang pilots also became V1 aces. Soft cover, 94 pages.
